「恋が僕らを許す範囲」 or “The Limits That Desire Allows Us” is a series by Motoni Modoru 「本仁」who seems to love exploring the boundaries and lines within the concepts of love and desire. In fact, this series is the one that inspired my curiosity and research within the concepts of 恋 and 愛. Her other series, Prince of Monsters also explores similar concepts, while Dog Style is in some way more typical BL, it hardly can be considered average.

The basic concept of this particular manga is there are two men, Fujio and Yamazaki, who lust for each other. However, they do not love each other and each has a girlfriend. Instigated by their girlfriends, who wish to break their unconsummated fascination with each other, they begin a physical relationship which is to continue as long as it is “within the limits that Desire 「恋」allows”. The story continues from there.

Amazing discussion and introspection aside, I must warn for

*awkward translation - as it is a very linguistically-demanding series, sometimes ther is some confusion as to the author’s original untranslated intent. This is exacerbated by the fact that it switched scanalators midway through the series

*occasional vulgarity - cock/pussy/tampon

*naked bodies - both male and female, although very few explicit sex scenes

*astandard relationships- which is really the point. Also, I would not say that any of the characters are particularly likeable as human beings. Then again, how many people are? It really does lend a sense of reality to the series in my opinion.

Overall, I would not consider it a NC-17 series in a traditional sense, but rather an “Adult-Oriented” series. Read all of it, and really think about what concepts it is trying to convey.

This image, out of all the Bleach fanart I’ve come across, seems to speak most eloquently to me. The shadows and lighting, as if having walked into a room early in the morning, and having chanced upon the private sight [someone else’s exclusive view] of this beautiful man spread out and spent upon bed, utterly relaxed and safe. Tastefully done and yet , perhaps because of it’s tastefulness, utterly erotic.

It also seems the most appropriate image for Abari Renji, as his first name is the combination of the kanji 「恋」or “earthly love” ＆「次」or “next”….which is a curious choice in an anime so utterly symbolic in it’s naming (second only to naruto, whose naming goes beyond the symbolic into the ridiculous. Yeah, I’m looking at you Swirly-Fish-Cakes McWhirlingSwirly)

I suppose a good beginning for this tumblr would be a sort of why and what for. I think I’ve always been fascinated by love, lust and all the many permutations and perceptions of the two, as well as the different linguistic shadings that we put upon them. Love vs. Lust and all that. So this is intended to aggregate my own opinions about the large spectrum of the two….as well as other people’s. A multi-cultural exploration, if you will. The origin of this blog’s title lies in Japanese, and a concept I’ve been exploring for a while.

The Japanese word for “true love” or “romance” is [renai] 「恋愛」what is fascinating about this is that it is made up of two kanji. The first is the kanji for lust or earthly desire, pronounced [ren] or [koi], written as「恋」 and showing up in various words which relate to the practicalities of desire, lovesickness, love poems and love rivals. One such example is when combined with the kanji for person 「恋人」it becomes [koibito] or “lover”. The other kanji is written「愛」and pronounced [ai] and is associated with emotional love, such as cherishing, admiration, affection and fondness. It is almost always used in the sense of one’s beloved child/pet/book or in terms of one’s wife/husband, or something habitual/enjoyed.

The concept that “true love” is the combination of “emotional love” with “earthly love” fascinated me, especially as a topic which shows up regularly within stories, culture and within interpersonal relationships fascinated me….and led to the creation of this tumblr.
